Biobank and sample service

The Biobank and sample service unit is responsible for the operation of the Blood Service’s biobank and acts as the administrative host for the Hematological Biobank FHRB. The unit is also responsible for the sample service activities of the Blood Service, which involve supplying surplus blood components from blood donors for product development or laboratory use.

By the end of 2024, the Blood Service’s biobank had received genotype information from 57,000 biobank donors and proteomics data related to protein function from 2,500 donors. Additionally, clinical chemistry determinations and complete blood counts were available for approximately 3,000 donors. The first part of the placental blood bank data collected from mothers who gave consent between 1999 and 2013 has also been transferred to the biobank.

In total, 25 research projects have utilized the Blood Service’s biobank, which consists of data from approximately 71,000 blood donors. The data is also used in development projects supporting the core activities of the Blood Service. The Hematological Biobank FHRB, which has been operating for ten years, had a record year with 11 data requests.
