Research
We updated the strategic focus areas of our research and product development activities. They now include the effectiveness of the blood supply chain, the effectiveness of cell and tissue compatibility, and the development of products and services.

In 2024, we spent a total of 4.73 million euros on research and product development activities, of which 1.65 million euros (35 %) was covered by external funding. The net cost was 5.4 % of the Blood Service’s revenue. The costs of research and product development activities include the Advanced Cell Therapy Centre and the Biobank and sample service unit.
Blood Service researchers were involved in 52 peer-reviewed scientific publications during the year, which were published in verified high-quality series. Additionally, Salla Markkinen’s doctoral thesis on tissue compatibility in kidney transplants was completed. A total of 70 doctoral theses have been completed within the scope of the Blood Service’s activities.
