Biobank and sample service

The Blood Service’s biobank focuses on healthy blood donors. The biobank collects samples and information from blood donors who have given their consent for scientific research. In addition, the biobank contains collections of placental blood and bone marrow stem cells. In 2025, material from the Blood Service’s biobank and its associated sample service was provided to a total of 84 research projects.

At the end of 2025, the biobank contained genotype data from 57,000 blood donors and proteomics data, i.e. data related to protein function, clinical chemistry measurements and blood counts, from 3,000 blood donors. In total, the biobank has samples from approximately 72,000 blood donors. Samples are also collected from the same donors at different times.

Until the end of 2025, the Blood Service was a co-owner of the Haematological Biobank. The Haematological Biobank has developed into a significant research infrastructure in its field, and its materials have been used in several medical studies. However, maintaining and developing its operations will require additional investments that the Blood Service is unable to make, and for this reason, the Blood Service divested its ownership of the Haematological Biobank at the end of 2025.
